Peat replacement...
....the sustainable green alternative

Each year some 28 million tonnes of peat are extracted worldwide. In the UK demand is approximately 3.4 million cubic metres per year for use by amateur gardeners and the horticultural industry. Of this amount approximately 87% is used as growing media and 13% as soil improver.

Destroying the peat bogs also releases stored carbon back into the atmosphere, which can contribute to global warming. This means that a workable alternative to peat is needed.

....introducing
the MunchA
Freeland is involved in the supply of compost to the horticultural markets and recognised the need to introduce a growing media which can be a suitable replacement to peat on a sustainable basis.
Over the last 3 years, Freeland has designed and developed the MunchA which transforms the oversize fraction from the composting process into a fibre which is ideally suited as a peat replacement.
Extensive growing media trials were conducted at Nottingham Trent University where the product was compared with industry standards and as a result proved to be ideally suited as a peat replacement.
The company is driven through its technical department and via its Research and Development programme creates products which would be considered unique in the industry.
Freeland supply William Sinclair Horticulture and Sincroboost (the brand name for MunchA) selected for its use in peat reduced and peat free multipurpose composts.
MunchA is going through a Patent and with a number of machines being constructed.
Freeland aim to supply 250,000m3 of peat free compost in the next few years which goes a long way to assist in meeting government targets for reducing the amount of peat harvested.
